Today I want to talk about whether you should start out with dropshipping by using Oberlo.
I see the temptation of it. It's a popular platform right now. Everybody's going on about it, and it sounds like an easy way to get started. You can join Oberlo, go to AliExpress, find thousands upon thousands of products, and use Oberlo to just load up your store with basically any product you want.
You get to skip the work of contacting suppliers, locking in contracts and getting reseller accounts. So I can see the benefits of it and I understand why people get so excited about the concept. Maybe they want to try running their first store with this method.
I think at the end of the day it's just so that they can skip trying to lock in those suppliers. I understand the appeal of that, but there are quite a few negatives to using Oberlo and Aliexpress. By skipping that supplier process, you're then moving all of your operations offshore, which can have a lot of negative effects on your business.
First, the quality of the products can be questionable, so you never really know if the quality of your products will meet your customers' expectations.
Shipping is another huge factor. If you've got a whole store full of products from a lot of different overseas suppliers, the shipping times will be very different and often very long. Customers don't like long shipping times. They're ordering online because they want to get a good price, but they also want to get their purchases as quickly as possible.
Even with shipping from within Australia, people still ask questions about when their packages will arrive within a few days of placing their order. So if you're expecting them to wait sometimes upwards of twenty days, you can see the issue. You're going to have multiple complaints, even if you've up front about the shipping times, so be aware of that if you're going to be using this method.
That's definitely going to affect your bottom line. It's going to affect the number of sales you get because people will look at the shipping time and they'll just go somewhere else.
I can see that a lot of people choose Oberlo and AliExpress because they get tempted by cheaper products that could provide higher margins. But the quality of the products can be questionable, so don't be tricked by those high margins and try to skip the process of getting a really high quality premium supplier.
I'm not saying that Oberlo and shipping primarily on AliExpress doesn't work in any way, shape or form. It's just not the business model that we recommend. We've done it here in Australia. We've been dropshipping here in Australia using premium Aussie suppliers now for our entire dropshipping career and it's worked well, so there's no reason that we would go into that business model.
There's a reason why we go into high quality premium suppliers here in Australia. You can build a relationship with these suppliers. You can get in touch with them if you have an issue. Dealing with problems through AliExpress is much more difficult and returns become an enormous issue.
If you're going to try and ship it back to the supplier and work out pays for it, this can be a huge hassle. If you've got a really solid relationship with your supplier you can just get on the phone and talk to them about it.
Shipping is not an issue when your suppliers are in the same country. You'll even have more options to expedite shipping for people willing to pay for faster delivery.
So those are my opinions about using Oberlo and AliExpress for your dropshipping business. Like I said, I'm not saying it doesn't work, but it's not the business model we recommend. We recommend you go with premium quality suppliers who will dropship here in Australia. That's the business model we work off and that's worked for us.
If you want to learn more about the model that's worked for us, we have a dropshipping course that we've specifically designed for dropshipping here in the Australian market. We show you step-by-step how to go through the entire process of building a dropshipping store, so check that out.
