5 Things You Need to Know Before You Start Drop Shipping in Australia

Today I’m going to be talking about the most important five things you need to know before you start drop shipping.

First, before you start or even if you’re just considering starting drop shipping, is number one: mindset.

If you are not ready to start a business and really give it a proper go, and I mean a red-hot go. I mean talking about putting in a few hours, at the very least, every single day. I mean staying on top of it, keeping up the grind, and treating it like it’s a part-time job. If you’re not ready for all that, you may as well not even start because it's not going to happen.

If you’re not ready to start a business and give it your all, you're going to fail. So get into the mindset. If you're going to start, don't start with “I might give this drop ship thing a go, I might snag a few sales.” Yes, you might snag a couple, but at the end of the day you won't see any real income, and you won’t turn it into a full-time replacement for your job. You must be willing to put in the time and really give it a go. Commitment is what this business is going to need.

Number two: forget about AliExpress.

In my opinion, it's selling dodgy, crappy, cheap crap from China, and it’s a waste of time. All the AliExpress people will say “hey, I made a hundred thousand dollars in three months!” Well, I've done the same over time and I've built a real business. When we build real business by building real relationships with our suppliers and selling quality products, we build a brand that will go strong for years.

Here’s an example. One of my mates got a hundred and fifty grand last year on fidgets spinners, and he's been talking about it ever since. He had a good run for about two or three months, and then he tried to sell the store on its downward slide, when it was starting to fade out.

If you build a real business, you'll do two grand a year, every year. Not only that, but you're building a digital asset. If you're doing constant numbers year after year after year, that's a real business. You can sell that for big money, not to mention that you've got an ongoing income.

AliExpress products are all based on trying to sell cheap crap on the Internet. Give it a go if you really want to do it, with Facebook ads and all the rest of it, but if you want to build a real business, you need to find real suppliers, quality products and build a brand. I'm not talking about an actual product brand, I'm talking a brand where people know who you are, that you’re not a big general store.

That leads us into number three: Shopify.

Shopify is the only platform to use. In my opinion, others aren’t even close. The support Shopify delivers is amazing, the platform runs smoothly, the apps that you can add on to your store really help optimize it, and it’s all next level. So, if you want to give drop shipping a try, use Shopify. Just start with the best..

Number four is a very important one: niche selection.

Don't build an enormous store selling everything from furniture to jewelry. You don’t want to have thousands of products on there that’s all cheap crap from China that nobody wants and breaks in five minutes.

Think about what you want to sell, maybe even something you're personally interested in. Really get your niche down, and what I mean by that is instead of just selling furniture, you might narrow your focus to just barstools.

Don't do a big general furniture store: niche down, become the authority. Have the biggest barstool ecommerce site. As you grow, people will know that you sell quality barstools, you've got the biggest range, you’re the best source. The smaller your niche the easier it’ll be to become the authority.

Lastly, number five: find your tribe.

Connect with like-minded entrepreneurs. If you’ve got the right mindset and are really giving it a go, some people among your friends and family won't quite get what you're trying to do. What you need to do is find your tribe. Look for Facebook groups, forums, blogs, and YouTube channels where people share your mindset.

I highly recommend you check out the Drop Shipping Australia Facebook group. It has a few thousand people in there, talking shop and connecting. If you can find your like-minded tribe, you can connect to ask questions, talk about your struggles, your highs and lows and everything else in between.

Your friends and family are probably always kind of supportive, but can be a bit negative sometimes, not even trying to, but they don't quite know what you’re going through. So you’ll need to connect with like-minded entrepreneurs to get some valuable support and understanding.
